Thank you TC for making my life just a little harder…

How much harder can my launch get? I’m launching the private beta of  SetJam on Wednesday morning, and left work last night FINALLY happy with how stable our system is. I even asked a couple of friends to take a look and bang on the system a little.

Strangely, it was completely unstable for them. Nothing seemed to be working. I’ve been up all night trying to figure this out. Just now, I remembered your little 1,2,3 easy article, about the new simplified FB connect implementation.

You see, we use FB Connect as our means of authentication (back when it took a month to figure out all the issues with FB Connect and Django). Now every idiot and asshole in the world is testing out the 123 easy, and FB connect can’t handle it! And now I can’t test my software 3 days before launch. So sad.

    Why is that TechCrunch's fault? Sounds like a Facebook issue to me – their system is known to be slow as is (but still better than Twitter).

      It's not really TC's fault. In reality, it's not FB's either. The real
      fault is my own. Using FB Connect for our primary authentication was a
      mistake from the beginning. It's probably cost us a developer month to keep
      it stable, and now the integrity of our entire site is beyond our immediate
      control. I'm old enough to know better.

        That's still very odd – I've used Facebook Connect for authentication on
        multiple sites and have yet to see slowness with it. I've seen slowness in
        other areas with Connect, but not authentication.

          It's not slow, it keep losing it's connection if that makes any sense.
          People are reporting it now with some popular apps (like they keep getting
          logged out of Tweet Deck). On SetJam, we don't handle it very well, so you
          look like you're still connected, but all of a sudden the site feels
          unstable (like shows you add don't save properly). It took a while to trace
          it back to FB.

            Interesting – I have noticed that on Facebook itself. Maybe it is extended
            to Facebook Connect as well. Seems to be only recent.
